What is Bellydance?  And better yet, why is it difficult, and require years of study? 

  • This dance form has been misunderstood as something offensive, and even confused as stripping. Realize this dance form is
    becoming more and more popular, respected, and cultivated around the world. It is technically, musically, and historically rich.
  • Belly dance is a main dance form of Egypt, Lebanon, and other Middle Eastern Countries.
  • Belly dance is a nick name created in the States, because of the use of abdominal techniques. The classical form of belly
    dance is actually known as Oriental Dance or Raks Sharki.

       Technically:

  • Technically, it includes muscle isolations over very specific foot patterns. Isolations often include hip and abdominal contractions
    that create the beautiful snake-like appearance. 
  • Folkloric Stylizations include footwork from various regions of the Middle East, while classical incorporates ballet and jazz. 
  • The music includes specific rhythms and scales. Rhythms include patterns such as Beledi and Saidi.
  • In its purest form, the dance and music are improvised. However, the Western influence has caused dancers to take on the
    concept of choreography. In the end, the dancer should be able to improvise, which is no easy task.

       History:

  • Belly dance is the world's oldest dance form. 
  • Its origins are not known specifically, however, here is what is known. One of its origins was preparation for child birth. 
    It very likely has come to be out of religious ceremonies and folkloric regional dances such Zar, Ghawazee, and Saidi. 
  • Belly dance became a tradition celebrated at homes and at parties. 
  • It has become a performance art because of its use in night clubs and concert halls.

          The study and coordination of movement, music, and culture work together and require much research and practice.
